Community Building Day With The Boston Teen Police Academy

On August 2, 2023, Norfolk Hardware partnered with the Boston Police Department for the second year, to host a building workshop with the Teen Police Academy.

The Academy, founded by Officer Darryl Owens back in 2007, is a paid summer program for Boston teenagers. The program offers six weeks of physical training, volunteering & other workshops in various Boston neighborhoods, helping the local community as well as fostering better relationships between the police and the Boston youth.

As Officer Owens explained to NBC Boston, “It’s all about building a bridge of understanding. When they are done with this program, the police aren’t this foreign thing, this enemy thing.”

Norfolk Hardware employees and volunteers worked side-by-side with the teens enrolled in the program and the supervising officers to build a total of 10 garden benches, intended for placement around the local police precincts for the public to enjoy. The teens were shown the basics of construction, including measuring, drilling, and construction safety. All necessary materials were donated and cut to size by Norfolk Hardware & Home Center.
